Mobile Auto Repair is looking for experienced automotive technicians in the Austin area who want to earn additional income performing mobile automotive repairs.
This is a 1099 independent contractor opportunity, designed for experienced technicians looking for flexible, part-time work alongside a shop position, dealership position, independent repair business, or other employment.
You choose which jobs you want to accept. There are no guaranteed hours and no requirement to accept every available job.
Technicians can accept opportunities based on their location, availability, and preferred service area.
How It Works
Mobile Auto Repair handles the customer-facing and administrative side of the job, including:
- Customer inquiries and lead generation
- Repair estimates
- Customer scheduling requests
- Payment collection
- Customer support
Available jobs are provided to technicians through the MAR Technician app for iOS and Android. Technicians can review the job details and decide whether they want to accept the work.
You provide your own transportation, tools, and automotive expertise.
Compensation & Job Availability
Technicians are paid $80–$100 per flagged/flat-rate labor hour, depending on experience, certifications, diagnostic ability, and the type of work performed.
This is flat-rate compensation, not an hourly wage. Jobs are quoted using commonly used automotive labor-guide times.
For example, a repair quoted at 3.0 labor hours is paid based on 3.0 flagged hours at your applicable technician rate.
Technicians with multiple ASE certifications, dealer/manufacturer certifications, advanced diagnostic skills, and extensive professional experience may qualify for rates closer to the top of the advertised range.
Current technicians typically flag approximately 5–20 hours per week, although job availability varies by market and technician availability.
There is no guaranteed minimum number of jobs or hours.
What You'll Do
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical vehicle concerns
- Perform mobile repairs at customers' homes, workplaces, or other approved locations
- Complete services such as brakes, starters, alternators, suspension, maintenance, gaskets, fuel-system repairs, and other mechanical/electrical work
- Perform vehicle diagnostics and troubleshooting
- Conduct pre-purchase and general vehicle inspections
- Identify worn, damaged, or unsafe components
- Test repaired systems for proper operation
- Communicate professionally with customers
- Submit diagnostic findings, photos, job updates, and completion information through the MAR Technician app
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- At least 2 years of professional automotive repair experience in a shop, dealership, fleet environment, or comparable professional setting
- At least one ASE certification OR dealer/manufacturer certification
- Strong knowledge of gasoline-powered vehicle repair
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting ability
- Ability to perform repairs independently without shop supervision
- Reliable transportation
- Valid driver's license
- Smartphone capable of running the MAR Technician app
- Ability to pass a background check
Applicants with prior felony convictions may still be considered based on the nature of the offense, the time that has passed, and its relevance to the work performed.
Tools & Equipment
Technicians must provide their own professional automotive tools and equipment appropriate for the jobs they accept, including:
- Hand tools, sockets and wrenches
- Electrical diagnostic tools
- Impact tools and cordless ratchets
- Floor jack and jack stands
- Scan tool or professional code reader
- Other specialty tools needed for accepted repairs
Technicians must also be willing and able to perform mobile repairs outdoors in varying weather conditions.
